3 Takeaways from the Chronicle of Higher Education's 2024-2025 Almanac
It's here! The 2024-2025 Almanac! What a page turner. I read the whole thing and I’ve picked 3 interesting takeaways that I don’t understand.
This Is Where New Ph.D.s Find Jobs
Source - The Chronicle of Higher Education 2024-2025 Almanac page 6
Ph.D.s’ job type changed dramatically from primarily Academe to Industry between 2017 and 2022.
Currently over 48% of all Ph.D. recipients plan on working in industry compared to 32% in Academe. The inverse was true only 5 years ago.
Even more interestingly, this trend is present across most fields including life sciences, engineering and physical sciences and not just computer science.
I wonder how this is affecting the quality and quantity of research in the university setting. Let me know what you think.

Political Ideology was the starkest difference across the 43 questions

Many of the questions in the survey related to the benefits and purpose of higher education. When comparing the demographics of the participants, one’s political ideology had a greater influence on their view of college.
87% of liberals think Colleges are a positive influence on their students overall thinking while only 50% of conservatives think so. In a previous edition of the Chronicle, the political leanings of the faculty and staff were predominantly liberal and conservative faculty members is in the minority now.
Could this be correlative or coincidental?

Degrees Conferred by Level, Discipline, and Gender, 2021-2022
Ph.D.s awarded:
I had no idea 75% of agricultural Ph.D. degrees are earned by women. In fact around 60% of associate, bachelor and master degrees are awarded to women.
Can someone help me understand this number?
My only explanation is veterinarian medicine but I’m a business major and clearly ignorant to the workings of the school of ag.
The other numbers aren’t new to me but the Ag number is a bit surprising and exciting.

Another trend I’ve recently seen is that freshman enrollment across many university campuses are at record numbers which is great to hear and great for job security.
Keep up the good work.
